A Conversation About Warren Ashby (1985)
In this archival video from 1985, friends and colleagues discuss the life and philosophy of Dr. Warren Ashby, the founder of the Warren Ashby Residential College at UNC-Greensboro.
The intro music to the video is Beethoven’s Sonata #30 in E Major Opus 109, one of Warren Ashby’s favorite pieces of music. Warren Ashby kept Journals most of his life - from the 1940s until his death in 1985. In one entry in his last journal he wrote:
"What do I mean when I say that I want, and try to live like Beethoven's Sonata 30 in E Major, Op. 109 and in C Minor, Op. 111? They are the two greatest sonatas I know and, are in fact, two of the greatest creations of the human spirit. To live like them would be to live, to be and become (both are always becoming and, at moments of fulfillment, are) essential human life.
They are simple and complex, they have loveliness and depth, they move in a breath from lightness to profundity, and the variations in 109 with multiplicity out of unity contain enough forms of being for a lifetime.
This does not begin to answer the question.
All art is a revelation, an image of life. Without necessarily knowing what he is doing--though many of the best know it--the artist expresses life; and the feelings great art {arouses} in one who sees, hears, touches are life feelings. Often "a lifetime burning in every moment."
So even if my rational, analyzing mind cannot say always what it is I want to be and become, what life I want and try to live, this I want to be these two sonatas. And sometimes when I listen to them I am aware, with fulfilled gratitude, that they are life, my life". - January 21, 1985

Looking back on these, they were so right about so many actors and movies. Do The Right Thing didn’t even get nominated which is insane, when watching it today it feels quite timeless of a movie.

@@TimBoyd2012 You could try using the Shazam app on your smartphone, but I think Santana is playing in the background at B.B.’s (the first store), and C+C Music Factory is playing at Tracks (the last store in the video. It’s whatever was playing in the store at the time I shot the video. I did not add any music in post-production because there was no post-production. This entire video was shot in sequence and edited in camera as it happened by me pressing the “start/stop recording” button. Read the description of this video for details.

I almost got into laserdisc at one point, but there were no stores in my area that sold a good variety of titles to justify purchasing this form of physical media. So I stuck with vhs until dvd came out. Then I started replacing all my vhs with dvd versions. Then, when Blu-ray came out, it took about a year and a half to go to Blu-ray and start replacing my dvd with Blu-ray. I only wish I knew then what I know now. Then I would have stopped at vhs and waited till blu-rays came out, and I would not have waisted my money on double dipping multiple formats.

I bought a copy of The Abyss Special Edition on laserdisc in pan and scan and you can imagine my disappointment. If only I knew what pan and scan meant at the time. I haven't even bothered watching the movie because of it. I guess I'll spend another $15 and buy the widescreen version.

Every now and again the usually magnificent Ebert goes wayy off course... ...I mean, ripping on Dead Poets Society as a 'smug' picture? What? (I suppose it goes to show - the wrong mood / the wrong cinema / the wrong day and anyone can completely misperceive a picture.) But I've long appreciated that he is a big enough man to modify his feelings / opinions later where he feels he got it wrong initially.

I noticed in those stores LPs were definitely phased out and the LDs were probably in the spot where the LPs previously were. 90 bucks for that Gone With The Wind set wasn’t so crazy, I can remember big DVD sets costing about the same amount circa 2001 or so.

Siskel and Ebert witnessed the change of artistic Hollywood movies into the franchise focused, toy-selling, universe/sequel building films that we see today. They are rolling over in their graves over these marvel movies without a doubt.

Interesting that they could easily have called the film that would be remembered best in 30 years' time (2020) by applying simple logic 🖖, but instead they yielded to sentimentality. Of course, it's the one that was a hit with children at the time: _The Little Mermaid_ (I'm sad to say) is probably much better remembered than _Do The Right Thing,_ _Driving Miss Daisy,_ or even _Born On The Fourth Of July._
